Planning to sign agreement for battery supply to U.S.’s electric car company Tesla, Samsung SDI recently started supplying sample batteries. Samsung’s goal is to have Tesla’s final approval in close future and mass produce•supply the battery from upcoming October.
Reliance on a single deal with in Japan’s Panasonic Co, Tesla is strongly pushing to add new partners for their supply . Realization of SDI’s battery supply is expected for smooth sailing.
Samsung SDI, Goals for mass produce and supply before upcoming October
The battery that Samsung SDI will supply to Tesla is 18650, a small cylindrical battery of 18mm diameter and 650mm length.
Tesla’s flagship sedan ‘Model S’ requires 6800 series/parallel connected ‘18650’ batteries per car. The second quarter sales record of Model S is 11,507, which means that Tesla is using about 80 million batteries per quarter. If only being able to account for 30%, supplying 24 million batteries per each quarter, and 8 million per month can be achieved.
Currently Tesla is completely relying on Japan’s Panasonic for Model S’s battery. Till now, the company contracted with one company for cost-reduction because there was not much production of Model S. However, for Tesla, new suppliers are urgent as production increased.
Addition of company which stably supplies ‘18650’ battery is necessary until Tesla’s own battery factory ‘Gigafactory’ fully works in 2017.

According to research firm B3, at the end of last year, Samsung SDI had ability to produce 56 million batteries per month and is planning to increase it to 69million in this year by adding more facilities.
Regarding to the fact that there was no increase of demand in laptop market, where cylindrical batteries are usually used, it can be assumed that Samsung SDI’s facility addition is for battery supply to Tesla. Batteries used in a Model S are amount of batteries used for 1000 laptops.
Supply agreement is getting visual as Tesla also selected cylindrical battery for ESS (enery storage system), ‘Powerwall’.

A business official said “Relying only on Panasonic, Tesla is rather more enthusiastic than Samsung SDI for battery supply” adding “the dualizing suppliers system will continue for stable battery supply even after Gigafactory finishes construction in 2017”
